STARS Programme 2019

Students need not worry if they are not fluent in English, they can learn it easily, VIT Vice President Dr. Sekar Viswanathan said on Tuesday.

An orientation programme was organised on Tuesday (July 9, 2019) in which VIT Vice President Dr. Sekar Viswanathan distributed admission letters to students admitted under the STARS programme this year at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT).

VIT’s Support The Advancement of Rural Students (STARS) programme aims to provide opportunities to pursue quality higher education to the underprivileged rural students. Each year, students are chosen from rural Tamil Nadu having topped the higher secondary examinations conducted by the State Government in their respective districts.

Addressing the students, Dr. Sekar Viswanathan said that those (Students) of you who have studied in Tamil medium need not be fearful or worry if you are not fluent in English, you can slowly learn the language and conversing with others.

“Don’t stop conversing in English even if you may be wrong as you will learn the language only by learning from the mistakes you do. One should look at VIT Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan as an example. He studied in Tamil medium and because of his untiring efforts he became fluent in English and later became an orator in English too. He use to read English newspapers daily and finds out meanings for difficult words using a dictionary. You (Students) too should also cultivate these habits and learn English. We will offer special training programme for students to learn English,” he added
