Scholarships worth Rs. 11.6 Crores Awarded on University Day'16
Over 2,900 students benefit from the University’s gesture
VIT University awarded Rs. 11.60 crore as education and sports scholarship to 2,946 students on the occasion of its University Day and Annual Sports Day on Tuesday.
Participating in the celebrations, T.B.Jayachandra, Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Higher Education, Karnataka, said they had decided to convene a conference of higher education ministers of all States and Union Minister for Human Resource Development in Bengaluru soon to solve the problems related to higher education in the country.
He stressed the need for policy makers at the Centre and State level to take steps to stop brain drain in the country.
He pointed out that the Gross Enrolment Ratio in India was 24 per cent, and this should be increased to at least 50 per cent by 2020, according to a press release.
He also wanted universities and colleges to offer skill development programmes so that students can become employable.
VIT Chancellor G. Viswanathan wanted regulatory bodies in education to be enablers, and not controllers of higher education in India. Colleges and universities should be allowed to start courses in areas where there is demand, he said.
He said that 4,064 students have been placed in 358 companies during the campus recruitment held this year.
V. Viswanathan, head, Engineering Hiring, Wipro presented the sports awards on the occasion. Gold medals were presented to meritorious students. Anubhav Srivastava, B.Tech Mechanical, bagged the Chancellor’s gold medal for best outgoing student, the release said.
Apart from sports awards, gold medals were given to meritorious students.
