INOVIT 2019
National Level Science Contest for School Students attracts 564 students
VELLORE: InoVIT 2019, the eighth annual National Level Science Contest for School Students began at Vellore Institute of Technology on Saturday.
Dr.Mangala Sunder Krishnan, Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the two-day National Contest.
The Contest is being organised by VIT every year to give a platform for school students from all over India to encourage their interest in science and also to demonstrate their area of interest. Competitions and innovative projects are displayed during the course of the two-day contest.
564 students from 33 High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala are taking part in the two-day contest. The students are divided into various teams and science competitions conducted for them. 70 teams are taking part in Working Models event, 42 teams in Idea Presentation, 59 teams in Poster Presentation and 62 teams are taking part in the Quiz contest.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, Dr.Mangala Sunder Krishnan, said that the event was the ideal forum for bringing out the talent of school students. He told the participating school students that school life was one where they got plenty of opportunities to prove themselves and they should make proper use of it. He said that in whichever field of study they were part of, they should be thorough with the fundamentals.
The findings and discoveries made by Galileo about 4,000 years ago and those made by Isaac Newton formed the basis for all scientific discoveries today. If the famous Brahadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur and the Grand Anaicut were still strong and firm even 1,000 years after their construction, it was only due to the efficiency of the brilliance of the scientific and engineering minds who existed then. Professor Sunder said that India had witnessed great advancements in science, technology and engineering. It was based on the flight of birds that man was able to design aircraft.
Students must use their abundant talent to make new discoveries and inventions, especially new technologies to step up production. Towards this endeavour, the teachers should prepare their students, Prof. Sunder added.
Dr. Anand A Samuel, Vice Chancellor, presided over the inaugural function, held at Anna Auditorium. Dr. S.Narayanan, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. A. Mary Saral, Dean, School of Advanced Sciences, welcomed the gathering. Dr. N. Arunai Nambi Raj, Organising Secretary of the National Contest, outlined the objectives of the event, and Dr. R.Vijayaraghavan also took part. Dr. E.James Jebaseelan Samuel, proposed a vote of thanks.
