Futuristic trends in Biotechnology and Computational Biology

(SBST) conducted a National conference on “Futuristic trends in Biotechnology and Computational Biology” sponsored by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi on 13th and 14th October 2016 with more than 250 delegates from different colleges and Universities. The conference focused on the latest and advanced trends in biotechnology and computational biology and their applications for understanding human diseases and also to enable scientific collaborations among experimental and theoretical groups.
Professor S. Vino, VIT University welcomed the delegates. Professor K. Ramanathan, Head, Department of Biotechnology briefed about the importance of this conference. Professor K.M. Gothandam, Dean, SBST, brought out the importance of various conferences, seminars and workshops being continuously conducted by the school for the benefit of researchers and students.
Mr.G.V.Selvam, Vice president, VIT University presided over the function. In his felicitation, he mentioned that Vellore takes pride in having two reputed educational and research institutes, viz., VIT University and Christian Medical College & Hospital. He urged for collaborations between physicians and biotechnologists to bring out cost effective medicines and technologies.
Dr.Sunil.T.Chandy , Director, CMC, Vellore was the Chief guest for the event. Dr.Chandy emphasised biotechnologists are instrumental in bridging the gap between fields of medicine and engineering. He pointed out that every 6 minutes a child dies in India due to malnutrition or poor health care facility. He urges the biotechnologist to “Feed and Fuel” the country through high nutritious crop development and pollution free biofuel production. He also stressed on the audience to focus more on the development of affordable public health care, easily available vaccines for infectious diseases, enhanced food resources and cheaper and pollution free biofuel. Dr. Micheal Gromiha, Professor, IIT Madras, Guest of honour of this august function highlighted the importance of computational biology in medical research. Professor C.Sudandira Doss, VIT University proposed the vote of thanks.?
